ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Sunday condemned the missile attacks launched in the skies above the cities of Riyadh and Jazin in Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Saturday.
The missiles, which included the first attack on the kingdom’s capital in more than a year, were intercepted by Saudi Arabia’s air defenses and resulted in only slight injuries from falling debris.
“It is particularly reprehensible that armed attacks were directed at civilian population that is already fighting a pandemic,” a statement from Pakistan’s foreign office said.
The statement went on to laud Saudi defense forces for the successful interception of the missiles, and the prevention of any loss of life.
The Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday that two civilians were slightly injured “due to the falling of the intercepted missile’s debris as it exploded in mid-air over residential districts.”
Yemen’s Houthis have launched hundreds of missiles and drones across the border into Saudi Arabia, mostly at bordering military and civilian targets, but also at the capital.
“Pakistan reiterates its full solidarity with the brotherly people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and reaffirms its support to the Kingdom against any threat to its security and territorial integrity,” the FO statement said.
