MIAMI: The Global Champions Arabians Tour, the world’s premier Arabian horse championship series, made its debut in Miami with a star-studded event held from April 17-19.

The event was the second stage of the GCAT Americas series and delivered a dazzling display of world-class Arabian horse excellence, international glamour, and signature Miami Beach luxury.

Over the course of three days, the event welcomed guests including VIPs, industry leaders, and international media. Set against the Atlantic shoreline, the event transformed Miami Beach into an equestrian stage, welcoming more 100 horses and handlers from around the globe to compete for GCAT points and a share of the Americas circuit’s $2.7 million prize fund. Categories were judged on type, head and neck, body, legs, and movement.

In the grand finale on Saturday evening the following horses captured Gold Championship titles:

Senior stallions: Tasheem PMA, owned by Theresa Lungwitz – Royal T Arabians, USA

Senior mares: Exxaltress, owned by Orrion Farms, USA

Junior colts: STA High Voltaj, owned by Al Wajba Stud, Qatar

Junior fillies: Ibitsam Aljassimya, owned by Al Jassimya Farm, USA

Yearling colts: Masarat, owned by Orrion Farms, USA

Yearling fillies: Rohara Aria Heiress, owned by The Aria Partners, USA

The closing ceremony featured aerial performances, immersive lighting, and live entertainment, with a performance of “All I do is Win” by DJ Khaled.

“The Miami Beach stage has exceeded all expectations,” said Faleh Al Nasr, chairman of the Global Champions Arabians Tour. “We’ve brought the passion and artistry of Arabian horses to a global audience here, in a city that embraces culture, elegance, and excellence.”

On Thursday evening, 17-time Grammy Award-winning artist Sting gave a beachfront performance that drew a crowd of notables including Jeff Bezos, DJ Khaled, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Lisa Hochstein, Julia Lemigova, and Kiki Barth from “Real Housewives of Miami”, Jon Vilma, businessman Michael Cayre, Etienne Sabino, Emily Austin, Jamie Reuben, Mario Carbone, Jeff Zalaznick, and more. Meanwhile Saturday featured a performance from Miami’s own Flo Rida and drew appearances from DJ Khaled, Jeremy Piven, Terrence J, model Karolina Kurkova, Martina Navratilova, Bethenny Frankel, Alexia Nepola, Alexis Stoudamire, and Mayor of Miami Francis Suarez.

As part of the 2025 GCAT Americas circuit, the Miami Beach stage followed the season opener in Scottsdale, Arizona, and precedes additional stages in Sao Paulo, Brandon (Canada), and Las Vegas — all leading to the grand finale at the World Arabian Horse Championship Supreme in Doha, Qatar.

Pope Leo XIV casts doubt on which soccer club he supports during audience with Italian champ Napoli
Leo cast doubt on the assumption that he’s a Roma fan during a private audience with freshly crowned Italian champion Napoli
“Maybe they didn’t want to applaud because in the media they say I’m a Romanista,” Leo said

VATICAN CITY: That Pope Leo XIV is a Chicago White Sox fan and likes to play tennis has already been established.

The most pressing sports question for many locals inside the Vatican and surrounding Italy concerning the first American pope remains a mystery, though.

Does Leo support an Italian soccer club?

Leo cast doubt on the assumption that he’s a Roma fan during a private audience with freshly crowned Italian champion Napoli — Roma’s rival — on Tuesday. But his comments revealed that he follows the Italian game.

When Leo entered the Clementine Hall inside the Apostolic Palace where Napoli’s players and staff were seated, there was a slight delay before the guests applauded.

“Maybe they didn’t want to applaud because in the media they say I’m a Romanista,” Leo said, referring to Roma fans. “That’s what the press says. Not everything that you read in the press is true.”

Napoli clinched its fourth Serie A title following a 2-0 win over Cagliari on Friday with goals from Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku.

Napoli president and film producer Aurelio Del Laurentiis presented Leo with a Napoli No. 10 shirt — the same number worn by the late Diego Maradona when he played for the southern Italian team — with the pope’s name on it and featuring signatures from all of the club’s players.

“You’re a No. 10,” De Laurentiis said, referring to the number often worn by a team’s most talented forward.

When De Laurentiis introduced Napoli coach Antonio Conte, the pope cut him off and said “I know him from the (TV) screen, I’ve seen him many times.”

Conte has also coached Italy’s national team, as well as Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

“He’s profoundly Catholic,” De Laurentiis said of Conte. “He’s someone who believes in God very attentively and goes to pray often.”

Leo cited the “social aspect” of Napoli’s title.

“We know how popular soccer is in Italy and practically the entire world,” Leo said. “So, in that respect, the social value of an achievement like this, which is greater than the mere technical-sports aspect, is an example of a team that works together, in which the individual talents are sacrificed for the common good.”

The pope also warned that “when sports becomes a business, it risks losing the values that make it educational, and it can actually become un-educational.”

“I want to make an appeal to parents and sports officials: you need to pay careful attention to the moral quality of the sports experience at the competitive level, because it has an impact on the humane growth of young people,” Leo said.

The meeting with Napoli came less than two weeks after Leo held a private audience with top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner.

  • Win was Jeddah club’s 15th Saudi top-flight crown

JEDDAH: Jeddah turned into a sea of yellow and black on Monday night as thousands of Al-Ittihad fans poured onto the streets to celebrate their team’s triumphant capture of the 2024–2025 Saudi Pro League title.

The win was the club’s 15th top-flight crown.

The celebrations erupted following a 1-0 victory over Damac in the final round at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, where 60,000 passionate fans created an electric atmosphere with four enormous tifos unfurled across the stands to salute the champions.

The jubilant scenes stretched across the city, with supporters waving flags, chanting, setting off fireworks and honking car horns along the Jeddah Corniche.

Many gathered at the Al-Ittihad Club premises and celebrated long into the night.

The title marks a significant milestone for the historic club, whose fans have remained fiercely loyal throughout the season. To show their appreciation for the support, the club invited a number of dedicated supporters to take photos with the league trophy at the team’s training ground.

While fans had hoped to celebrate the achievement with players in an open-top bus parade, Al-Ittihad management announced the festivities would be postponed until after Friday night’s King’s Cup final against Al-Qadsiah, also set to take place in Jeddah.

Club President Loay Mashabi, who oversaw Al-Ittihad’s title victory in his first year in charge, expressed his emotions after the final whistle, saying: “I don’t know if I will ever experience a joy greater than this; making millions of fans happy is a responsibility I carry with pride.”

Werder Bremen fire coach who declined to extend his contract
  • Werner had a contract to the end of next season, but the club said on Monday that he refused to sign a new one
  • “It’s anything but easy for me not to extend my contract,” Werner said

BREMEN: Werder Bremen fired coach Ole Werner on Tuesday after he indicated the day before he would not be extending his contract next year.

“Since we need continuity and clarity for the position of head coach in the future, we have decided to let Ole go,” Bremen’s managing director for sport Clemens Fritz said.

Werner had a contract to the end of next season, but the club said on Monday that he refused to sign a new one.

“It’s anything but easy for me not to extend my contract. But I’ve often said that my job is about developing a club. When a certain point is reached, there are usually two options — either you make changes around a coach, or you make changes to the coaching position,” Werner said in a club statement.

“From the club’s perspective, I can understand why Werder have now decided to take this step.”

The 37-year-old Werner, regarded as one of Germany’s leading young coaches, took over at Bremen when they were in the second division and oversaw promotion, then steady improvement in the Bundesliga. The team only narrowly missed out on European qualification this season.

Werner took over as Bremen coach in unusual circumstances in November 2021 after his predecessor Markus Anfang resigned while facing an investigation into his use of a fake COVID-19 vaccine document.

Bremen said their search for a new coach has their “highest priority.” Horst Steffen, the coach of second-division Elversberg, has emerged as a favorite after his team narrowly missed out on Bundesliga promotion on Monday.

Leipzig, Wolfsburg, Augsburg and promoted Cologne are also looking for new coaches, as are second-division clubs Schalke and Hannover.

Andreeva digs deep to sweep past Bucsa, into French Open second round
  • Sixth seed Andreeva advanced 6-4, 6-3 past her 98th-ranked opponent with two aces and four breaks of serve
  • “I just tried not to think about last year’s results,” said the 18-year-old

PARIS: Rising Russian teen star Mirra Andreeva booked her ticket to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday, recovering from an early double break before reeling off a straight sets win over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.

Sixth seed Andreeva, who had an impressive run to the semifinals at Roland Garros last year, advanced 6-4, 6-3 past her 98th-ranked opponent with two aces and four breaks of serve.

“I just tried not to think about last year’s results,” said the 18-year-old.

“It’s always tough to start a tournament. I felt like she was playing good today. My goal was just to keep fighting, playing, and showing everything I can, trying to put a lot of balls in the court. Then in the end, point by point, I managed to find my rhythm.”

Playing her first Grand Slam match as a top-10 seed, the player from Siberia needed to come back from 3-0 down in the first set in damp and chilly conditions in Paris.

“If it’s cold I suffer a bit in (the) warm-up,” said Andreeva. “But to be honest I don’t feel the difference when either it’s hot or cold.”

Andreeva pulled out a winner down the line to revive her game when Bucsa was serving at 3-0, 30-0.

She won 10 of the next 12 games to take a 4-1 second-set lead and needed just one break of serve in the second, sealing victory with 25 winners to Bucsa’s 16.

She next plays either American Ashlyn Krueger or Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands for a place in the third round.

The Russian reached the quarter-finals on clay in both Madrid and Rome, losing both times to American Coco Gauff.

“It’s not what I would wish for. But I can say that overall these two tournaments on clay that I played, they were not that bad,” she said.

“There are a lot of positives that I can take and a lot of experience that I also can take with me. Now I’m going to try to do everything I can the best way I can while I’m playing here.”

Middle East’s first professional ice rink to open in Dubai this year
  • Emirates Sports Arena at Dubai Sports City designed to meet NHL standards
  • 600-seater venue will also host entertainment, community events

DUBAI: The UAE’s sporting scene is set for a major new addition with the opening later this year of the Emirates Sports Arena, the Middle East’s first professional ice rink.

Set to open in September, the facility in Dubai Sports City aims to position Dubai as a hub for ice hockey, figure skating and other ice disciplines in the region.

The arena, located next to the Emirates Sports Hotel and Apartments, marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s sports infrastructure. The state-of-the-art venue will host professional games, international tournaments, training camps and community events.

With seating for 600 spectators, the 10,000-square-meter facility has been built to meet the standards of North America’s National Hockey League, including maintaining the temperature of the ice surface at between 16-18 degrees Celsius.

Its state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems plus high-definition screens and range of dining options means it can also be used for figure skating competitions, concerts and other forms of entertainment.

The arena’s operators hope it will provide a base for nurturing grassroots winter sports across the UAE and neighboring countries. A dedicated winter sports academy will be established nearby, offering training programs for aspiring athletes, coaching clinics and youth development initiatives.

The arena is a major boost to the UAE’s previously limited provision of ice rinks, which comprised only smaller venues in Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain.

A core element of the project is fostering inclusivity, with the arena featuring dedicated professional spaces for female athletes and coaches, aligning with broader initiatives to promote women’s participation in sports. Special events, matches and tournaments for women and girls will be organized regularly, encouraging greater interest and engagement in winter sports disciplines.

Vladimir Burdun, CEO of Emirates Sports Group, said: “We believe that the opening of the first professional ice arena will revolutionize winter sports and hockey development in the Middle East. The Emiratis are showing growing interest in winter sports and this facility will support the national teams’ growth and international competitiveness.”

Burdun, who owns the Dubai Mighty Camels hockey team and has been instrumental in developing professional hockey in the UAE for more than two decades, said the new arena would be pivotal to the future growth of the sport.

“We are already in discussions with the UAE Winter Sports Federation to designate the arena as the official training base for the national figure skating and ice hockey teams in preparation for major world championships. Our goal is to create a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures talent from grassroots levels to international competitions,” he said.

“This arena is more than just a building. It’s a catalyst for dreams, careers and regional sports excellence. We are proud to lead this transformative journey.”
