CALAIS, France: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote to French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday asking France to immediately start taking back all migrants who land in England after crossing the Channel, after at least 27 died when their boat foundered off Calais.
Taking back migrants "would significantly reduce — if not stop — the crossings, saving thousands of lives by fundamentally breaking the business model of the criminal gangs" behind the trafficking, he said in a letter sent to Macron on Thursday evening.
The record wave of illegal migrants seeking to cross the English Channel is a volatile issue for both leaders amid rising anti-immigrant sentiment and controversy over what critics say is a callous attitude in both capitals.
Johnson's letter also set out areas for greater cooperation with France, proposing joint border patrols, aerial surveillance and intelligence sharing.
"We are ready to begin such patrols from the start of next week," Johnson said.
Britain and France had earlier called for a coordinated European response to stop people-trafficking in the Channel after the deadliest accident since the waterway in 2018 became a key route for migrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia trying to reach England from France.
Home Secretary Priti Patel spoke with French counterpart Gerald Darmanin to put forward plans for greater "collaboration and innovation", according to a statement.
The two will meet this weekend and Patel will send officers to Paris after having offered to provide more people on the ground, it said.
However even as Paris invited European ministers to an emergency meeting at the weekend, the response risked being undermined by continued Franco-British squabbling after Brexit.
Macron, after vowing France would not allow the Channel to become a "cemetery", spoke earlier to Johnson to agree on stepping up efforts to thwart the traffickers blamed for the surge in crossings.
And in a terse readout of the talks, the Elysee Palace said Macron told Johnson that France and the UK have a "shared responsibility" and added he "expected the British to cooperate fully and refrain from exploiting a dramatic situation for political ends".
Patel had earlier refused to rule out the controversial step of turning migrant boats back across the Channel, under legislation now making its way through parliament."France is a transit country, we are fighting against these networks of smugglers who exploit people's misery, but for this we must improve European cooperation," Macron said on a visit to Croatia, saying that when the migrants arrived in northern France "it is already too late".
Seventeen men, seven women and three minors died when the inflatable boat lost air and took on water off the northern port of Calais on Wednesday. A manslaughter probe has been opened.
Darmanin said five suspected traffickers accused of being directly linked to the doomed crossing had been arrested.
Darmanin said only two survivors, an Iraqi and Somali, had been found and they were recovering from extreme hypothermia and would eventually be questioned.
Calais mayor Natacha Bouchart said a pregnant woman was also one of the victims.
About 200 people, mainly activists and some exiles, gathered early on Thursday evening in Calais to pay tribute to the victims.
The circumstances of the tragedy have not yet been clarified, but Mohamed, a 22-year-old Syrian, told AFP he was one of the last people to see them: "They were with me here in Calais three days ago.
"Three days ago, the group told us 'we're leaving for England', and they left," he said.
He said conditions were dangerous yesterday.
"In addition they went to sea without equipment," he said.In telephone talks, Johnson and Macron agreed on the "urgency of stepping up joint efforts to prevent these deadly crossings", according to Downing Street.
But Johnson told British media London had faced "difficulties persuading some of our partners, particularly the French, to do things in a way that the situation deserves".
In a sign of the tensions, Britain's biggest-selling tabloid newspapers all carried a front-page picture of a French police vehicle apparently sitting idly by as migrants entered the waters off northern France.
More than 25,700 people have made the cross-Channel journey in small boats this year -- three times the total for the whole of 2020, according to data compiled by Britain's PA news agency.
Darmanin insisted that Paris was doing all it could to break the trafficking networks, saying France had arrested 1,500 people smugglers since the start of the year.
Prime Minister Jean Castex also held a crisis meeting on Thursday with ministers to discuss new measures and invited the British, Belgian Dutch and German immigration ministers to a meeting in Calais on Monday.

Kuwait’s non-oil sector steadies in April, UAE maintains growth in April
RIYADH: Non-oil activities in Kuwait demonstrated steady growth in April, buoyed by effective advertising and competitive pricing, supporting the expansion in new orders, an economy tracker revealed.
According to the latest Kuwait Purchasing Managers’ Index by S&P Global, the country’s PMI dipped to 51.5 in April from 53.2 in March.
A PMI reading above 50 indicates growth in the non-oil private sector, while readings below 50 signal contraction.
The report noted that job creation scaled back for the first time in eight months as companies aimed to minimize costs, while the rate of purchase price inflation was one of the sharpest on record in April.
According to the survey, this reduction in workforce numbers, coupled with a shortage of available raw materials, led to a buildup of backlogs of work in April.
“The slowdown in growth seen in April is not cause for immediate alarm as Kuwaiti firms were still able to generate solid expansions in new business and output at the start of the second quarter,” said Andrew Harker, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
The report mentioned that output prices increased only modestly in April, as companies endeavored to limit price hikes to customers by offering discounts.
Furthermore, input costs also surged sharply in April, driven by a marked rise in purchase prices.
“Growth continued to be predicated, at least in part, on competitive pricing. This put pressure on margins given rapidly increasing input costs, however. In a bid to limit expenses, firms cut back on employment numbers, thereby restricting the extent to which they were able to fulfill orders,” said Harker.
He added: “There are clearly risks that this will prove unsustainable and so companies will be hoping that either cost inflation moderates or that demand strengthens sufficiently to reduce the need for discounting in the months ahead.”
UAE maintains strong growth
Meanwhile, in another report released last week, S&P Global revealed that the UAE’s non-oil private sector maintained robust output growth in April. The Emirates’ PMI reached 55.3, down from 56.9 in March but remained firmly above the 50 mark, indicating expansion.
According to the survey, this slowdown was attributed to floods and rains that hit the country in April.
“April data highlighted strong overall growth across the UAE non-oil private sector as buoyant domestic economic conditions helped to support long-term business expansion plans. However, the latest survey signaled a sharp slowdown in new business gains in the wake of heavy rainfall and flooding,” said Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence.
He added: “Companies operating in Dubai recorded a particularly acute loss of sales momentum as adverse weather disruptions hit business and consumer spending.”
S&P Global revealed that backlogs of work increased considerably in April, attributed to temporary business disruptions and heightened pressure on operating capacity.
The report added that non-oil businesses in the UAE remained optimistic about future output over the next year, although the level of optimism eased, dropping to its lowest reading since January.
“Non-energy businesses are nonetheless still highly upbeat about their year ahead growth prospects. Many commented on strong sales pipelines and swift recovery from the impact of heavy rainfall,” noted Moore.
According to the survey, higher levels of employment were recorded in April, driven by new project starts and resilient demand conditions.
Koepka leads by 2 after second day of LIV Golf Singapore

SINGAPORE: For the third time in the last 18 LIV Golf regular-season tournaments, Brooks Koepka will take a three-shot lead entering the final round, this time thanks to a brilliant 7-under 64 in Saturday’s rain-delayed second round at LIV Golf Singapore.
When the Smash GC captain held such an advantage the previous two times, he closed the deal in Orlando and Jeddah last year. Given that the five-time major champion has found his form as his PGA Championship title defense looms later this month, it will be a big challenge for his Singapore pursuers to catch him.
Koepka’s Smash GC teammate, defending Singapore champion Talor Gooch, described the task succinctly: “Hard.”
But, he added, not impossible. “Winning golf tournaments is never easy,” Gooch said. “We all know that. Hopefully, we can make it not easy on him. Hopefully, I can make it not easy on him tomorrow.”
Koepka is at 12 under for the tournament, with Fireballs GC’s Abraham Ancer, Cleeks GC’s Adrian Meronk and the RangeGoats GC duo of Thomas Pieters and Matthew Wolff tied for second at 9 under. Four other players are another shot back – Gooch, Ripper GC’s Lucas Herbert and Marc Leishman, and HyFlyers GC’s Cameron Tringale.
If Koepka converts the three-shot lead into another victory, he will become the first LIV Golf player to win four individual tournaments. He also has a chance to lift two trophies on Sunday if his Smash team can convert its one-shot lead over the Rippers into the team title.
Although he’s playing with plenty of confidence, Koepka is taking nothing for granted.
“Anything is possible,” he said. “Gooch is trailing. He plays this place pretty well. I’ve just got to go out and do what I do, and from there, you can get beat. I have no problem with that if I get beat. But I just want to go out and play good golf, and that’s all I want to do, especially leading into the PGA.”
That good golf was evident following the 4 hour 45 minute weather delay that pushed the shotgun start back to the afternoon. After three pars to start his round, Koepka birdied the par-5 fourth when he threaded his second shot between a row of palm trees, his ball finishing just off the green.
That was the first of three consecutive birdies, and he finished his bogey-free round with four birdies in his last seven holes. A two-shot sequence seemed to epitomize his day — a 53-foot birdie putt on the 13th, then a near-ace on the 14th.
“Brooks was faultless today,” said Pieters, one of his playing partners on Saturday with first-round leader Sebastian Munoz. “I assume he’s going to do the same tomorrow, and it’s going to take a very low one from those of us behind him to win.”
“He’s comfortable being in the lead,” added Wolff, a former Smash teammate who was traded in the offseason to the RangeGoats. “He’s playing good. I think this golf course actually suits him really well. I’ll do what I can control, and other than that, just see what happens.”
Koepka has his wife Jena and nine-month-old son Crew in Singapore with him this week. It’s the third tournament Crew has attended, the first being LIV Golf Miami and the second at the Masters. His father finished T45 both times.
“I was reminded of that on the way over here,” Koepka said. “Hopefully get a little better result.”

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Sunday for winning a third consecutive term in office, saying the landmark victory reflected the British-Pakistani official’s dedication to public service.
Khan, 53, who was first elected in May 2016, beat his Conservative rival Susan Hall by more than 276,000 votes, with his win representing a swing of 3.2 percent to the Labour party. He won nine of the 14 constituencies, results showed on Saturday.
Taking to social media platform X, Sharif offered his heartiest felicitations to Khan for his “hattrick” of victories.
“As a hard-working British Pakistani, he not only raised the head of his parents high but also made every Pakistani to rejoice his victory with pride,” Sharif wrote.
He offered Khan best wishes for his future success as mayor of London.
“The prime minister further said that his re-election for the third term also indicated his popularity and his devotion to public welfare,” the Pakistani prime minister wrote.
Khan, who replaced Boris Johnson as London mayor in 2016 and who has widespread policing and budget powers, has been an increasingly divisive figure in the past few years regardless of the facts for or against, particularly in the suburbs, where he fared worse than in the inner city.
His supporters say he has multiple achievements to his name, such as expanding housebuilding, free school meals for young children, keeping transport costs in check and generally backing London’s minority groups. His critics say he has overseen a crime surge, been anti-car and has unnecessarily allowed pro-Palestinian marches to become a regular feature at weekends.

Naila Kiani becomes first Pakistani woman to summit world’s fifth-highest mountain

KHAPLU, GILGIT BALTISTAN: Dubai-based mountaineer Naila Kiani has become the first woman from Pakistan to summit Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world, the country’s leading non-governmental organization promoting mountaineering said on Sunday.
Mount Makalu is located in the Mahalangur range of the Nepal Himalayas, southeast of Mount Everest. The imposing mountain stands at 8,485 meters (27,838 feet) high. Kiani’s latest achievement makes her the first and only Pakistani woman to summit eleven peaks higher than 8,000 meters.
She has previously summited Broad Peak (8,047 meters), Annapurna (8,091 meters), K2 (8,611 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), Gasherbrum 1 (8,068 meters), Gasherbrum II (8,035 meters), Nanga Parbat (8,125 meters), Mount Everest (8,849 meters), Manaslu (8,156 meters) and Cho Oyu (8,201 meters).
“Congratulations, Nail Kiani has summited Makalu,” Karrar Haidri, the secretary general of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, told Arab News over the phone.
“So far out of 14 eight-thousanders, she has completed the 11th peak. She summited the peak at 8:50 am local time,” he added.
The Alpine Club said in a separate statement that Naila was grateful for all the prayers and wishes she had received from people, thanking Sherpa Gelgen Dai from Imagine Nepal, a company that promotes mountain trekking and peak climbing in Nepal.
“This latest success highlights her exceptional endurance and determination,” the statement said. “She now holds the record as the fastest Pakistani, both male and female, to have summited 11 of the 8,000-meter peaks, accomplished in under 3 years.”
Kiani is a Pakistani banker living in Dubai and a mother of two. She garnered fame in 2018 after her wedding photos from K2 basecamp were widely shared on social media. The Pakistani climber received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s third-highest civilian award, in March this year for climbing Mount Everest.
“We are proud of the inspiration created by Naila, not only for her daughters and wider family but across the nation from every household,” Khalid Raja, Kiani’s husband, told Arab News over the phone.
Supporting his wife’s expeditions, Raja said it gets challenging for him at times to look after their children when Kiani is away.
“If Naila completes 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks, then we hope she can reduce the levels of time that she is away from her family and we can build together from there,” he said.
“Then who knows, maybe I can do a few expeditions of my own.”
Saudi Arabia’s non-oil sector maintains growth with steady PMI of 57 in April
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s non-oil private sector continued its growth momentum in April, driven by strong demand conditions across domestic markets, as indicated by an economic tracker.
The Kingdom’s Purchasing Managers’ Index in April remained unchanged at 57 compared to March, signifying a flourishing non-oil economy in the country, according to the Riyad Bank Saudi Arabia PMI report by S&P Global.
In February, PMI hit a five-month high of 57.2, while it was 55.4 in January.
According to S&P Global, any PMI reading above 50 indicates growth in the non-oil sector, while readings below 50 signal contraction.
David Owen, senior economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: “The latest Saudi PMI has sustained a robust figure of 57.0 for the second consecutive month, signifying a flourishing non-oil economy. This uptrend hints at an anticipated spike in the non-oil GDP, likely exceeding the 4.5 percent mark for this year.”
He added: “Noteworthy is the surge in new orders and inventory expansion, indicative of a proactive response to mounting demand within the market.”
According to the report, expectations of strong sales performance drove companies to increase their purchasing activities in April, while cost considerations caused a decline in job creation during the month.
S&P Global highlighted that the overall rate of input price inflation eased to a nine-month low in April.
“Despite a decline in employment figures, there’s a notable increase in the costs associated with employment to incentivize the workforce. This strategy aims to bolster productivity and ensure the retention of skilled workers within the expanding economy,” added Owen.
Competitive pricing, promotional activity, investment, and expanding client bases, particularly in the domestic market, were other crucial factors that propelled the non-oil private sector in the Kingdom in April, the report noted.
Regarding the future outlook, most of the companies in Saudi Arabia that took part in the survey expressed a positive view due to continued improvement in sales performances in April.
“The prevailing strength in demand, along with strategic marketing initiatives and corporate expansions in both wholesale and retail sectors, further fortifies the positive trajectory of the Saudi economy,” Owen said.
He concluded: “The sustained expansion, coupled with evolving market dynamics, underscores a favorable environment for continued economic prosperity and stability in Saudi Arabia’s non-oil economy.”
