SAMENA Council lauds Saudi Arabia’s role in 5.5G innovation

Participating in the 15th Global Mobile Broadband Forum hosted by Huawei, the SAMENA Telecommunications Council, an industry association championing the digital advancement of the South Asia, Middle East, and North Africa regions, reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in driving 5.5G (5G-advanced) innovation and digital transformation.

“We are on the brink of a transformative era in connectivity, one that will redefine industries, uplift communities, and support sustainable development. Through the SAMENA Council, we are creating a unified platform to bring diverse stakeholders together and catalyze progress in the whole region,” said Bocar Ba, CEO at SAMENA Council, on the sidelines of Huawei’s Global MBBF 2024 in Istanbul, Turkiye.

Under the theme “5.5G Leads Mobile AI Era,” this year’s Global MBB Forum by Huawei focused on the rapid development of 5.5G infrastructure and AI-powered applications. More than 1,000 participants, including mobile network carriers, ecosystem innovators and technology leaders from across the world gathered to share insights on how these advances will impact industries and individuals.

The Kingdom has become a focal point for SAMENA Council’s efforts to promote next-generation connectivity and cross-sectoral collaboration. “Saudi Arabia is an important market for the SAMENA Council and its members and is the region’s largest digital economy,”
added Ba.

Bocar Ba, CEO at SAMENA Council

“The Kingdom’s proactive initiatives and strong collaboration between government entities and the private sector have created a fertile environment for accelerating digital transformation. From telecom operators like stc, Mobily, Zain, and Salam to key government regulators, Saudi Arabia is setting a benchmark for the region.”

The council is actively engaging with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and industry leaders to address critical areas, including spectrum management, fixed wireless access deployment, and agile regulatory frameworks that support the adoption of 5.5G technologies.

The council is also collaborating closely with the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, to address emerging cybersecurity challenges. “Cyber resilience is critical as we scale up 5.5G,” Ba said. “Our work with CST and other stakeholders like MCIT ensures a secure, future-ready ICT infrastructure that can support diverse applications across industries.”

As the Kingdom prepares for the widespread implementation of 5.5G, SAMENA Council has been instrumental in identifying opportunities for leveraging this transformative technology. Ba emphasized that 5.5G will unlock innovative applications across critical industries such as health care and education.

“The next phase of 5G is already here,” he said. “Saudi Arabia is well-positioned to lead the way in adopting 5.5G technologies, which will not only accelerate economic diversification but also drive significant improvements in quality of life. Fixed wireless access, in particular, will play a crucial role in connecting underserved areas and bridging the digital divide.”

To support these efforts, SAMENA Council has launched the ELITE FWA Club, which focuses on promoting fixed wireless access as a key enabler of digital inclusion. In addition, the council is working with global technology providers such as Huawei to accelerate digital innovation and develop future-focused use cases for 5.5G.

“Saudi Arabia’s vision for digital transformation is inspiring. By fostering collaboration between government entities, technology providers, and telecom operators, the Kingdom is not only transforming its economy but also setting a global benchmark for what sustainable digital development should look like,” added Ba.

SABIC wins Edison Awards for innovations that are helping build a better world

Despite the complex challenges on the world stage, SABIC continues to stand out with its innovative solutions for a sustainable future, creating solutions that benefit both humanity and business.

Honoring SABIC’s commitment toward innovation, the prestigious Edison Awards has recognized the company for an unprecedented six of its innovative solutions across three categories — Material Science, Green Energy Transition, and Clean Water, Food & Agriculture – demonstrating once again how innovation and collaboration remain core drivers of its growth strategy.

This is the fifth year in a row that SABIC’s solutions have been recognized by the Edison Awards, which honors the world’s most innovative new products, services, and business leaders.

SABIC won one gold, two silver, and three bronze awards.

In the Materials Science category, SABIC won four awards:  LNP WF0087N and WFB16NiQ compounds for smartphone middle frames that boost fire safety and signal performance; LEXAN LUX2289, the first ultra-white light-shielding material for headlight brackets; THERMOCOMP WFC061I, the first FR, laser-weldable thermoplastic for electric vehicle control units; and LNP ELCRES FST2734E, the first FST-compliant, sustainable, high-quality thermoplastic for railway interiors.

SABIC won an award each in the Green Energy Transition category for developing the world's first electrically powered steam cracking in partnership with BASF and Linde; and in the Clean Water, Food & Agriculture category for its unique, patented process that transforms by-product gypsum and CO2 into valuable agricultural products.

The company’s innovations are developed at its global network of innovation hubs, across the Middle East, Asia, the US and Europe.

Through these centers, SABIC develops groundbreaking technologies and market-focused solutions that address the world's evolving needs.

With its TRUCIRCLE initiative, SABIC develops a variety of innovative applications used across the value chain.

The initiative encompasses the company’s circular materials and technologies, including certified circular polymers from chemical recycling of used plastic, certified bio-based renewable polymers, and more.

Moreover, SABIC is seeking to improve the overall sustainability of energy storage solutions enabled by its BLUEHERO initiative, which is designed to help accelerate the transition to electric power and support meeting global goals on climate change.

SABIC also emphasizes strengthened partnerships with Saudi universities through knowledge-sharing initiatives that build their capabilities and drive groundbreaking ideas.

For instance, SABIC and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology have collaborated to develop a new technology for metalizing plastics that eliminates the use of a chemical that is classified as a substance of very high concern by the EU.

SABIC Agri-Nutrients is also bringing differentiated bio-enhanced fertilizer products to the market.

Its portfolio includes biologically enhanced urea fertilizer powered by BiOWiSH, which has the potential for lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional urea and for increased sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide into the soil.

Tumi unveils ‘19 Degree Lite’ luggage collection

International travel and lifestyle brand Tumi has introduced 19 Degree Lite, the latest — and lightest — addition to the world of high-end luggage. To celebrate the new collection, German-raised fashion entrepreneur and creative Xenia Adonts stars in the first chapter of the campaign, with chapter two starring global ambassador Lando Norris to follow later this spring.

The 19 Degree Lite collection reimagines hardside for the lighter — rebuilding Tumi’s icon from the bottom up with revolutionary lightweight materials and details. Every element — from its highly resilient Tegris construction to unique features like the low-density magnesium telescoping handle — was considered, tested and selected for lighter journeys. The globally assorted collection includes four sizes available in three core colors: Blush, Titanium Grey, Black Graphite, and two seasonal colors: Amber and Cobalt.

To introduce the collection, Tumi tapped Adonts for her first-ever global brand campaign. Directed by Keane Pearce Shaw and photographed by Emma Summerton, the campaign channels the feeling of lightness that comes with carrying the 19 Degree Lite collection.

The campaign follows Adonts as she travels through the hustle and bustle of Mexico City with her 19 Degree Lite by her side. Together, they navigate the busy streets with a fluidity of movement that spotlights freedom and effortlessness that 19 Degree Lite delivers.

“19 Degree Lite was born out of our deep understanding of how Tumi customers travel — and our passion for perfecting their journeys,” said Creative Director Victor Sanz. “Every component was carefully considered, tested and selected for lighter journeys without compromising quality or performance.”

The result of this meticulous design is an effortlessly lightweight collection that allows our customers to move through the world with even greater ease.”

The new collection ranges in price from $795-$995.

The 19 Degree Lite collection is available in Tumi stores worldwide and on the brand’s website.
