Knicks edge Celtics in overtime thriller, Doncic hurt in Mavs win

  • Detroit Pistons, owners of the worst record in the Eastern Conference, sprung a surprise in Brooklyn, where Kyrie Irving’s 40 points weren’t enough for the Nets in a 130-122 defeat

LOS ANGELES: Julius Randle scored 37 points to lead the New York Knicks to a 120-117 overtime victory over the NBA-leading Boston Celtics on Thursday as the Dallas Mavericks held off Phoenix despite an injury to star guard Luka Doncic.

Randle added nine rebounds and Jalen Brunson scored 29 points with four rebounds, seven assists and a crucial block as time expired as the Knicks thwarted Boston’s comeback bid.

They handed the Celtics a third straight defeat on the heels of their nine-game winning streak.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum celebrated his selection as an All-Star starter with 35 points and 14 rebounds. Jaylen Brown scored 22 points with nine rebounds.

But Boston’s star duo also combined for six key turnovers, and Brown missed two free throws with 7.6 seconds remaining to hurt Boston’s cause.

“I’m a better basketball player than I played today,” a dejected Brown said. “Those two missed free throws kind of embodied the whole game for me — didn’t get it going, didn’t give my team enough energy to win.”

Randle, meanwhile, drained a pair of clutch free throws with 21.2 seconds left and RJ Barrett added another two foul shots before Brunson swatted away a potential game-tying three-pointer by Malcolm Brogdon as time ticked off in overtime.

“We’ve been in these games before,” Randle told broadcaster TNT after the Knicks squandered a late 12-point lead but managed to hang on.

“All year we’ve been in up and down games. We’ve lost those games at the end, we’ve won them at the end, so there’s a sense of being comfortable in those positions and knowing how to execute whether you’re up or down.”

Tatum scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, but he missed a potential game-winner and when teammate Robert Williams grabbed the rebound Boston’s Jericho Sims blocked his put-back attempt.

In Phoenix, Doncic — who came into the night leading the league in scoring — limped out with a sprained left ankle less than four minutes into the contest.

X-rays were negative, but he didn’t return, with Spencer Dinwiddie stepping up to fill the void with 36 points and nine assists.

The Mavs led the entire second half, but two driving layups from Chris Paul pulled the Suns within 96-95 with 19.7 seconds remaining.

Dwight Powell came up with a key rebound off teammate Reggie Bullock’s missed free throw and then made two free throws of his own as the Mavs put it away.

“No one ever panicked and we found a way to win a game,” said Mavs coach Jason Kidd, who did not have an immediate update on the severity of Doncic’s injury after the game.

The Detroit Pistons, owners of the worst record in the Eastern Conference, sprung a surprise in Brooklyn, where Kyrie Irving’s 40 points weren’t enough for the Nets in a 130-122 defeat.

Saddiq Bey scored 25 points to lead eight Pistons players in double figures — despite the absence of star guard Cade Cunningham, backup point guard Cory Joseph and center Marvin Bagley.

Alec Burks scored 20 points for the Pistons, who ended a four-game losing streak as they rebounded from an embarrassing loss to Milwaukee on Monday in which they gave up 150 points.

“We just knew we had to start off better than that and just play better throughout the four quarters,” Bey said. “I think we were very eager just to nip that one in the bud and just keep going.”

The Pistons capitalized on their size advantage against the short-handed Nets, who were again without star Kevin Durant and saw Ben Simmons depart early with a sore left knee.

In Charlotte, the Hornets celebrated LaMelo Ball’s return from a three-game injury absence with a 111-96 come-from-behind victory over the Chicago Bulls.

In Los Angeles, Paul George scored 35 points and Kawhi Leonard added 27 for the Clippers in a 138-100 wire-to-wire rout of the San Antonio Spurs.

Report: Dustin Johnson agrees to new deal with LIV Golf

  • Johnson re-signing with LIV Golf does not come as a big surprise
  • The 41-year- old has said he enjoys freedom the league’s schedule affords him

NEW YORK: Dustin Johnson is among the early signings for LIV Golf who have reportedly agreed to second contracts with the Saudi-backed league.

Johnson originally signed with LIV Golf in June 2022 for a contract that is believed to be in excess of $100 million. While terms of his new agreement aren’t known, he is staying with the league.

“Multiple sources confirm that Dustin Johnson has signed a new contract with LIV Golf,” the golf site Flushing It, which is known to have strong sources within the league, posted on X. “The details of the deal are unknown at this stage, but the 2022 Individual Championship winner was in New York recently to meet with officials and will be returning as captain of 4 Aces GC in 2026.

“There’s been lots of speculation about star names leaving the league, but we understand that most players up for renewal this year have already agreed terms and will be teeing it up next season, with all players not released or relegated also expected to do so.”

Johnson re-signing with LIV Golf does not come as a big surprise. The 41-year- old has said previously that he enjoys the freedom that the league’s schedule affords him and that he does not envision playing well past his prime.

Johnson is coming off a disappointing 14th-place finish in the individual race this year, while the 4Aces finished seventh in the team competition. He has also fallen to 595th in the Official World Golf Ranking while struggling in recent majors.

The winner of the 2016 US Open and 2020 Masters missed the cut at both this year, along with the PGA Championship, before finishing his major season with a T23 at the Open Championship.

Johnson fell as low as 907th in the world following the US Open, but reclaimed some points by making the weekend at The Open and tying for 15th at the International Series Philippines last week, where he finished 11 shots behind winner Miguel Tabuena.

There has been speculation that some of the early defectors to LIV Golf may be considering a return to the PGA Tour as their paths into future majors dwindle. Chief among them is Brooks Koepka, whose initial contract is believed to expire after the 2026 season.

Like Johnson, Koepka made the cut at only one major this year, finishing T12 at the US Open. The 35-year-old has fallen to 227th in the world, but a potential return to the PGA Tour is clouded by the one-year wait currently mandated by the tour for players who depart LIV Golf.

Serie A leader Napoli beat Lecce 1-0, Camarda in tears after missed penalty

  • Frank Anguissa scored the only goal of the match at Lecce after Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic had saved a penalty from teenager Francesco Camarda
  • Lecce were two points above the relegation zone

MILAN: Despite mounting injury problems, Napoli moved clear at the top of Serie A with a 1-0 win at Lecce on Tuesday.
Kevin De Bruyne was the latest player sidelined and the talismanic midfielder will most likely not return until February after a serious thigh injury in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Inter Milan.
Frank Anguissa scored the only goal of the match at Lecce after Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic had saved a penalty from teenager Francesco Camarda.
Defending champion Napoli moved three points clear of Roma, which host Parma on Wednesday. AC Milan can close the gap back to one point if they win at Atalanta later.
Lecce were two points above the relegation zone.
Napoli struggled to break Lecce down and the home side had a great opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty early in the second half following a lengthy video review as Juan Jesus was adjudged to have touched Kialonda Gaspar’s header with his hand.
Milinkovic-Savic is known as somewhat of a penalty specialist and he lived up to his reputation by denying Camarda. The Serbian has saved five of the last nine spotkicks he has faced.
The 17-year-old Camarda, who is on loan from Milan, looked distraught and was seen in tears on the bench after being substituted in the 70th minute.
That was moments after Napoli had taken the lead as Anguissa met David Neres’ pinpoint free kick with a glancing header into the top far corner.

Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez involved in car accident that kills an 81-year-old man

  • The incident happened near Inter’s training center in Appiano Gentile
  • The man was pronounced dead at the scene

MILAN: An 81-year-old man using an electric wheelchair died after being hit by a car driven by Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez on Tuesday, according to Italian media reports.
Police investigating the accident said the man may have suffered a sudden illness and veered from the cycle path into the lane in which Martínez was driving, the reports said.
The incident happened near Inter’s training center in Appiano Gentile, just outside Milan.
The Spanish goalkeeper and other motorists immediately stopped to help.
Emergency vehicles including an air ambulance arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martínez was in shock but uninjured. Inter canceled coach Cristian Chivu’s press conference as a sign of respect.

Saliba and Martinelli add to Arsenal’s injury issues

  • Arteta is unsure how long Saliba and Martinelli will be on the sidelines
  • “He’s out. We are assessing him but he won’t be involved in this match“

LONDON: Arsenal duo William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli will miss the League Cup fourth-round tie against Brighton as the Gunners’ injury problems mount.
France defender Saliba was forced off at half-time due to an unspecified injury in the Premier League leaders’ win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Brazil forward Martinelli limped down the tunnel with a knock after coming on as a second-half substitute against Palace.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who revealed Declan Rice will be available to face Brighton after he was also injured against Palace, is unsure how long Saliba and Martinelli will be on the sidelines.
Losing two of his key players for any length of time would be a major setback as Arsenal try to win a first Premier League title since 2004 and a maiden Champions League crown.
The north Londoners are already without Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Jesus due to injuries.
“He’s out. We are assessing him but he won’t be involved in this match,” Arteta said of Saliba on Tuesday.
“It looks as well Martinelli is going to be out. We have to do some more tests and see the extent of the injury but this game is going to be too early for him.”
Martinelli’s absence is another blow to Arteta’s attacking options.
Viktor Gyokeres, signed from Sporting Lisbon in the summer, has started all 12 of Arsenal’s Premier League and Champions League fixtures this term, scoring five goals.
Arteta, who last won a trophy with the 2020 FA Cup, is wary of becoming further depleted in attack and is likely to rest the Sweden striker against Brighton.
“In the front line, that’s where we have more difficulties with Noni out, with Kai out, with Gabi Jesus out, with Gabi Martinelli out as well,” Arteta said.
“That’s the area where we have to be more careful, more conscious, because we don’t have that many options.
“We are going to try to manage the load as good as possible, to make sure that the players are fresh, they can compete really well, and the team can maintain the level that it is showing.”
Victory over Palace moved Arsenal four points clear at the top of the Premier League, with seven wins from nine top-flight matches.
Arteta is embracing the current optimism around the club after the frustration of finishing as Premier League runners-up for a third successive campaign last term.
“That’s what we want,” he said. “When our people are excited and you see that the team is competing at the level consistently, they are the right reasons to believe.
“If you want to win big trophies, you certainly have to install that feeling among the team, the club, and around it.
“We are in a really good position at the moment but we know how early it is and how difficult every game is.”

Howe glad Newcastle kept hold of ‘complete package’ Osula

  • Osula has enjoyed more game time than expected this season, albeit it largely as a substitute
  • “Obviously it didn’t happen and much to our relief it didn’t happen because Yoane picked up an injury and Will is vitally important,” Howe said

LONDON: Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Tuesday backed William Osula to become “the complete package,” expressing his relief the striker did not leave the club on deadline day.
Eintracht Frankfurt were reportedly poised to complete a move for the 22-year-old in the transfer window, but Newcastle called off talks.
Osula has enjoyed more game time than expected this season, albeit it largely as a substitute, after big-money signing Yoane Wissa suffered a knee injury on international duty.
“Obviously it didn’t happen and much to our relief it didn’t happen because Yoane picked up an injury and Will is vitally important,” Howe said when asked how close Osula came to leaving St. James’ Park.
“We believe in his talent. He’s got speed — I think you could see that when he came on the pitch the other day — he’s quick, he’s athletic.
“But also I think what he’s added just through the continued attitude to his training, a lot better know-how, nous in terms of how to manage game situations.
“He’s benefited from that and he’s coming on the pitch looking like the complete package.”
Newcastle host Tottenham in the League Cup last 16 on Wednesday, with Osula in line for a rare start after scoring twice in the previous round against Bradford City.
The Dane has only started once in the Premier League this season, making the majority of his appearances as a substitute for Nick Woltemade.
“He’s an incredible athlete,” added Howe.
“Obviously he’s doing cameos at the moment, we’d love him to be able to sustain that for longer, which is very difficult, but he’s got the physical capabilities of delivering that, I think.”
