  • Festival aims to safeguard ‘Saudi Arabia’s cultural and natural heritage,’ says Nouf Al-Moneef

RIYADH: Noor Riyadh 2024 concluded on Saturday after 17 days filled with creativity, art, and culture.

The festival, held under the theme “Light Years Apart,” featured artworks from more than 60 Saudi and international artists across three hubs: King Abdulaziz Historical Center, Wadi Hanifa, and JAX District.

Each piece was inspired by the history and culture of the Kingdom, weaving together tradition and creativity. The artworks explored the bond between humans and the environment, and emphasized the importance of preserving natural resources.

Fahd Alnuaimah’s light installation “Mangiah” depicted a caravan of white camels and masterfully brought to life the spirit of the desert. Saeed Gamhawi, meanwhile, created a sculpture symbolizing the unification of the Kingdom, composed of 21 lit columns, which became a striking icon of this year’s event.

“Energy of Vision” was an interactive installation created by Hmoud Al-Attawi that embodied the Kingdom’s vision for a bright and prosperous future, glowing brighter when sensors detect a presence nearby. The artwork depicts how “how human contributions are vital to growth and progress,” according to the artist’s statement.

Dr. Effat Fadag, curator of Noor Riyadh 2024, told Arab News that the festival is a valuable opportunity to foster artistic collaboration and knowledge exchange between creators from the Kingdom and around the world.

“This exchange significantly supports local artists and plays a pivotal role in the growth of Riyadh’s art scene, solidifying the city’s position as a global hub for contemporary art,” she said.

One of the key goals of the festival is to enhance the quality of life in the capital by providing an inspiring platform that brings together families, artists, and creatives, encouraging them to embark on a journey of artistic discovery, and “transforming Riyadh into a vibrant cultural destination teeming with creativity,” Fadag added.

Festival director Nouf Al-Moneef noted that Nour Riyadh underscores Saudi Arabia’s position as a cultural and creative hub in the region.

“(The) festival captivated global attention with its extraordinary art installations, while shining a spotlight on the vital importance of safeguarding Saudi Arabia’s cultural and natural heritage,” she said. “Noor Riyadh 2024 was a resounding success, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s ability to host world-class events.”

  • Al-Wasil was recognized for contributions to multilateralism, dialogue, peace promotion and international cooperation
  • He was elected in June as vice president of the General Assembly

LONDON: Saudi Arabia’s UN ambassador received the 2025 Spirit of the UN Award in the Diplomat Category on Monday for his contributions to multilateralism, dialogue, peace promotion and international cooperation.

Abdulaziz Al-Wasil was elected in June as vice president of the General Assembly and has assumed positions including chairing the Commission on the Status of Women this year.

“This recognition is a tribute to the enduring principles of multilateralism and the shared commitment of the international community to peace, dialogue and cooperation,” he said on X.

Al-Wasil positioned Saudi diplomacy at the forefront of the Two-State Solution Conference in September, co-chaired with France. The event led several countries to recognize Palestinian statehood as part of efforts to promote peace and security in the region.

He dedicated the award to “all who uphold the noble ideals of the UN in advancing a more peaceful and compassionate world,” and to those who shaped his educational and professional journey, including his family and colleagues at the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Doctors granted Saudi premium residency praise benefits of scheme
  • Dr. Seham Othman Omar: The premium residency has many benefits, including freedom of movement
  • Othman Omar: Before the distinguished residency, a person was restricted to working in the hospital where he was employed

RIYADH: Doctors who were granted premium residency status in Saudi Arabia praised the benefits of the scheme at an event in Riyadh on Monday.

Speaking to Arab News at the Global Health Exhibition, Dr. Seham Othman Omar, an associate consultant in pediatric cardiology at the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh, said: “The premium residency has many benefits, including freedom of movement.”

She added that the premium residency gave her greater flexibility over where she worked, which allowed her to treat patients “in many hospitals, and in many cities.”

Dr. Omar came to Saudi Arabia in 2000 and worked in several different places, including Qassim and Jubail, before settling in Riyadh at the National Guard Hospital.

The premium residency “allowed us to move from hospital to hospital and from city to city to assist in some hospitals, such as those that lack cardiologists,” she said.

“Before the distinguished residency, a person was restricted to working in the hospital where he was employed.

“Now, however, the doctor can work in other places and contribute to transferring expertise and helping patients in hospitals that do not have consultants specializing in cardiology,” Dr. Omar said.

In the pursuit of securing high-quality services and developing the economy, the Premium Residency Card was introduced in 2019 to retain and attract exceptional professionals to the country.

At last year’s health exhibition, a number of physicians were granted premium residency status.

The scheme, unofficially known as the “Saudi Green Card,” aims to contribute to the national economy and boost the country’s position as a global hub for attracting talent, investors and entrepreneurs.

The center offers seven categories of premium residencies, including the special talent residency, investor residency, entrepreneur residency, real estate owner residency, limited duration residency and unlimited duration residency.

Dr. Eyhab Solaiman also shared his experience with the scheme, and said that it allowed him to travel, work and share his expertise in other locations.

“I applied for the card last year and within a few months, the Premium Residency was issued after fulfilling the requirements,” he said.

“It did not require permission when leaving the country and returning to Saudi Arabia.”

Dr. Solaiman is a consultant cardiologist and advanced cardiac imaging specialist at the King Abdulaziz Center for Heart and Lung Diseases, Surgery and Transplantation.

  • Rayan El-Barkachi Aboutrabi: It’s about becoming closer with one another as governments and further developing relations
  • El-Barkachi Aboutrabi: We think a lot about Saudi Vision 2030, and we would like to diversify our economy

RIYADH: When the yellow, blue and red ribbon was cut, a new era of diplomatic relations was born as Colombian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Rayan El-Barkachi Aboutrabi marked the opening of the first Colombian Embassy in the Kingdom on Monday night.

“It’s about becoming closer with one another as governments and further developing relations, as well as for the Colombian people and the Saudi people to come closer together,” the ambassador told Arab News.

Saudi Arabia is also committed to opening its own embassy in Colombia, as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir said in a meeting in Bogota with his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Leyva Duran in May 2023.

Two memoranda of understanding have also been signed between the two nations — one promising more academic cooperation and the other for political consultations between the two foreign ministries.

The vice ministers of foreign affairs of both countries, Waleed El-Khereiji and Francisco Jose Coy Granados, signed the agreements in Bogota in April 2024.

Aboutrabi highlighted his intention to improve cooperation in economic relations, tourism, renewable energy and agriculture, and noted the deep love and appreciation both peoples have for good coffee.

“Our similarities in those areas signify a pull for us to come closer together as nations and peoples.”

He said that some of the biggest priorities in cooperative areas right now are clean energy, agriculture, sustainability and tourism.

“We think a lot about Saudi Vision 2030, and we would like to diversify our economy.”

EV Auto Show powers ahead in Riyadh with smart mobility focus
  • The 4th edition of the event highlights new electric models, local manufacturing and talent development as Kingdom drives toward Vision 2030
  • SIXT CEO Juan Carlos: Riyadh has more charging stations than we have in Madrid

RIYADH: The fourth edition of the EV Auto Show opened at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center on Monday, highlighting the full spectrum of green mobility options.

As Saudi Arabia accelerates towards its Vision 20103 smart mobility targets, new market research from PwC Middle East shows 40 percent of the country’s consumers are considering buying an electric vehicle in the next three years.

The Kingdom has set an ambitious goal to transition 30 percent of all vehicles in Riyadh to electric by 2030, as part of a wider strategy to reduce emissions in the capital city by 50 percent. The transformation is being driven by ambitious targets, substantial investments in local electric vehicle manufacturing and rising consumer confidence.

Speaking about how Saudi Arabia is evolving to cater to the development of the EV sector, Faisal Sultan, the president of Lucid Motors in the Middle East, told Arab News: “The Kingdom now has a structure to cater to that. A lot of progress has already been made (in) the last two years with the formation of the EV infrastructure company by the PIF. We are strongly collaborating with them. Then there are private companies. I think consumers will have a lot of options in the next two to three years.”

He added: “Also, there will be chargers all over the place. Lucid is doing some innovative stuff … we are putting them in hotels, we have several parking lots where we have installed these chargers. These are free to use … that’s going to solve a lot of issues.”

Sultan said he believed Riyadh was taking the lead in ensuring 30 percent of new car sales in the Kingdom would be EVs by 2030, as per the Saudi Green Initiative, and that other cities would follow.

Juan Carlos, CEO of SIXT, told Arab News: “Coming here to Saudi Arabia to see how well EV technology is being implemented, I was surprised, Riyadh has more charging stations than we have in Madrid, which is my city of origin.”

He added: “I was surprised, because at the end, it is an integral part of the mobility within this country. It is clearly supported by the government in line with Vision 2030. We are doing an exercise of implementing the technology with our solutions. Right now, we are probably one of the largest fleets of rental EV fleets in this country, and our ambition really is to continue increasing, those fleets in order to provide a mobility solution which is sustainable.”

While he felt Europe was still behind due to a lack of infrastructure, expanding EV penetration was going well in Saudi Arabia, said Carlos. The Kingdom has already expanded its public charging network to more than 200 locations, with plans for more than 1,000 stations by 2030.

This year’s EV show brings together over 120 exhibitors from 35 countries, highlighting the latest electric and plug-in hybrid technologies. It also features local manufacturing, charging infrastructure and workforce training.

ROX Motor’s luxury all-terrain SUV, the ROX ADAMAS, debuted in Saudi Arabia following its global unveiling in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, while Lucid Motors presented the Gravity SUV, showing the growing range of premium electric options available to local consumers.

The exhibition floor features electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from both established manufacturers and new market entrants, including BYD, Tesla, SIXT, Chery, Jaecoo and iCAUR.

Over the three days, industry executives, government officials and technical specialists will share insights with manufacturers, importers, fleet operators, charging network developers, financial institutions and other stakeholders.

Attendees can test-drive the latest electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, comparing performance, range and features across brands and price points, as well as explore technology and energy management solutions.
