  • Late strike lifts Portuguese star’s goal tally to 14 — and saves goalkeeper’s blushes

RIYADH: Cristiano Ronaldo’s fine goalscoring form continued in the Saudi Pro League on Sunday as he helped Al-Nassr defeat Al-Fateh 3-1 to move back into third place.

A late strike made it three goals in two games for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as he moved clear at the top of the goalscoring standings with 14 for the season so far.

The deadlock was only broken four minutes before the break when Marwane Saadane put into his own net from close range after Angelo drove a low ball across the face of goal. Angelo was the provider of the second just before the hour, swinging over a free-kick for French defender Mohamed Simakan to head home his first goal for Al-Nassr.

At 2-0 the game seemed done and dusted, but with 18 minutes remaining, Al-Fateh, in last place in the standings, reduced the arrears thanks to Mourad Batna, who pounced after goalkeeper Bento spent too long on the ball inside his own area and was caught in possession.

Ronaldo spared Bento’s blushes with three minutes of normal time remaining, just as the visitors were threatening to take a surprising point.

It was so simple. Sadio Mane broke free down the left, passed to the far post, and there was the Portuguese star to sweep home with the minimum of fuss.

Ronaldo had the ball in the back of the net once more deep into injury time, smashing home spectacularly from the right side of the area, only for the strike to be ruled out for offside.

Al-Nassr now have 35 points from 17 games, eight behind Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, who have a game in hand.

Earlier in the day, Al-Ahli made it seven wins from the last eight in the league with a 5-0 thrashing of Al-Riyadh.

Two goals from England striker Ivan Toney and one each from Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez, and Ziyad Al-Johani made the difference as the Jeddah club stay in fifth, three points behind Al-Nassr.

  • A goal at the end of each half means that the Jeddah giants recorded just their second win in five league games

JEDDAH: Al-Ittihad defeated Al-Orubah 2-0 on Thursday to move eight points clear of Al-Hilal at the top of the Saudi Pro League.

A goal at the end of each half means that the Jeddah giants recorded just their second win in five league games to put the pressure back on the defending champions Hilal, in action against Ettifaq on Friday.

It was a regulation –and very deserved –victory for the Jeddah giants who may not have been at their fluent best but were still too strong for the visitors, struggling just above the relegation zone.

After a bright start from the Tigers, Karim Benzema came close to having the ball in the net after 14 minutes but, regardless, the effort from the former Real Madrid megastar was ruled out for offside.

The opening goal came in the seventh minute of first half added time. Fabinho found Unai Hernandez with a short pass but the Spaniard was still a long way from goal. The former Barcelona player then took a touch and then fired a shot into the top corner to record his first strike since joining the club in January.

For Al-Orubah, Omar Al-Somah was a constant threat. The former Al-Ahli striker was unable to find the target, however, despite looking dangerous.

There were other concerns from the hosts however, as Benzema was withdrawn six minutes from the end after seeming to pick up an injury.

Whatever happens with the French forward, coach Laurent Blanc was able to relax, along with the home fans in Jeddah, two minutes from the end of regulation time thanks to Abdulrahman Al-Oboud.

The 29 year-old collected the ball from Moussa Diaby on the edge of the area and while his first-time shot was saved by Gaetan Coucke, the Belgian goalkeeper could not get up quickly enough to stop Al-Oboud from slotting home the rebound.  It meant that the contest was over.

There were still chances for Al-Ittihad to extend their lead but in the end, all were content with a win and the chance to see how Al-Hilal perform in their next game.

Al-Taawoun edge close to Asian final with narrow win over Sharjah
  • An early strike from Abdelhamid Sabiri was enough to settle the clash
  • All to play for in the second leg in UAE next week

BURAIDAH: Al-Taawoun took a big step towards the final of the AFC Champions League Two on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Sharjah in the first leg of their last four clash.

An early strike from Abdelhamid Sabiri was enough to settle the clash in Saudi Arabia but there is still much work to do in the United Arab Emirates next week in the return match.

The home fans in Buraidah were celebrating, waving their yellow flags and dreaming of a first ever continental trophy inside two minutes. Mohammed Al-Kuwaykibi’s cross caused problems for the visiting defence, it was headed out to the edge of the area and there was Sabiri to fire home with a fierce shot.

The visitors were rattled and after giving the ball away in defence two minutes later, were relieved as Al-Kuwaykibi’s shot from long range went just over the bar with the goalkeeper struggling.

Sharjah came close to the equaliser after 19 minutes but while Guiherme Biro was found in a good position in the area, the Brazilian slightly slipped as he sent the shot over.

It seemed to get better for the UAE team seven minutes into the second half as they were awarded a penalty as Ousmane Camara went down in the box under a challenge from Mohammed Mahzari. Yet, after a VAR intervention, the decision was reversed, much to the relief of the home fans.

Yet it was the away team who were happier with 18 minutes remaining as Al-Taawoun came within millimetres of extending their lead.Musa Barrow broke free down the right, cut inside and, with just the goalkeeper to beat, the Gambian goalgetter fired his shot against the inside of the post.

It means that there is all to play for in the second leg in Sharjah next week. It should be quite the battle.

Benzema breaks Al-Ahli hearts in Sea Derby special

Benzema breaks Al-Ahli hearts in Sea Derby special
  • For the 60,000 fans at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, there was plenty of excitement
  • There was some worrying news for Al-Ittihad fans as goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic picked up an injury

JEDDAH: The honours were shared in a thrilling Sea Derby on Saturday as Al-Ahli drew 2-2 with Al-Ittihad, who twice came back to earn a precious point.

A 95th minute strike from Karim Benzema broke the hearts of home fans and put the leaders five points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League.

For the 60,000 fans at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, there was plenty of excitement and entertainment in a game that could have gone either way.

There was some worrying news for Al-Ittihad fans after goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic picked up an injury in the thrilling King’s Cup semi-final win over Al-Shabab on Tuesday, but stand-in Mohammed Al-Mahasneh showed his worth early in the first start of the season.

In the eighth minute, he saved from Firas Al-Buraikan’s low shot from inside the area and then got down quickly to deny Ivan Toney from the rebound.

At the other end, Edouard Mendy returned to the fitness and the No.1 position for Al-Ahli, after not playing a competitive game for three weeks. There is no doubt however that his opposite number had more to do in the early exchanges.

But the Tigers started to look dangerous and, just before the break, N’Golo Kante broke into the area, went around the goalkeeper but pulled his shot just wide.

The miss became more painful four minutes after the restart as Al-Ahli took the lead with a simple set piece. Riyad Mahrez swung over a corner kick from the left and Brazilian defender Ibanez climbed high on the edge of the six-yard box to head the Greens into a deserved lead.

It was all looking good for the hosts but then, with 15 minutes remaining, the fans in yellow and black were celebrating. Saleh Al-Shehri dropped deep and his slide-rule pass found Moussa Diaby on the right side of the area and the French winger made no mistake with his first-time shot.

Then, in the 82nd minute, Al-Ahli were back in front. Kante tried to block a cross but succeeded only in finding Toney and the England striker shot home from close range.

That strike looked as if it had won a famous victory for the home team but for the second time in four days, Al-Ittihad hit back deep into added time. Abdulelah Al-Amri found Benzema with an exquisite pass to the back post and the former Real Madrid star was never going to miss.

The goal takes the leaders to 62 points from 26 games, five clear of Al-Hilal. Al-Nassr are third with 54, two and five ahead of Al-Qadsiah and Al-Ahli respectively.

  • Hosts Al-Qadsiah take lead before Ettifaq grab second-half equalizer
  • Newly promoted Al-Qadsiah remain 4th on Saudi Pro League table

RIYADH: The Eastern derby ended 1-1 on Saturday as Al-Qadsiah were held by Ettifaq in what was a blow to their chances of a top-three finish, and a place in next season’s AFC Champions League.
Newly promoted Al-Qadsiah took the lead, had the best of the possession, chances and the game in general, but could not get the all-important second goal to kill the contest off, and Wijnaldum ensured that they paid the price in the second half.
Al-Qadsiah remain fourth on the Saudi Pro League table, two points behind Al-Nassr and five behind second-placed Al-Hilal.

Going into the game, the hosts were on a high after booking their first-ever place in the final of the King’s Cup on Wednesday, and all was looking good at the break as they took the lead.
Mohammed Qasem picked up the ball on the left, near the Ettifaq area, and curled a cross into the six-yard box. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tried to get a head on it and did enough to distract goalkeeper Marek Rodak, who could not gather the ball. Instead, it bounced out to Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat, who reacted quickly to fire home from close range.
Ettifaq have been in good form, however, since the departure of Steven Gerrard as head coach in late January. Under Saad Al-Shehri, the replacement for the Liverpool legend, the Greens had taken 16 points from their last previous eight games to move up to seventh in the table, though the last match was a defeat against struggling Al-Fayha.
They were always in the game and then, three minutes after the hour, grabbed the equalizer. It came from a similar position on the pitch as Qadsiah’s opener. Vitinho curled a free kick into the area for a number of white shirts to attack the ball and Wijnaldum got there first, heading past goalkeeper Koen Casteels.
It was the 11th league goal of the season for the former Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, an impressive return.
Both teams pushed forward in an attempt to take all three points, but in the end, they had to settle for one each.

Ronaldo delivers Riyadh Derby glory for Al-Nassr
  • Ace marksman scores twice in fierce battle
  • Yellows also put major dent in title chances of local rivals with victory

RIYADH: Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to help Al-Nassr to a 3-1 win over Al-Hilal on Friday and a first Riyadh derby victory in the Saudi Pro League for over three years.

The Yellows also put a major dent in the title chances of their local rivals, who stay four points behind Al-Ittihad at the top of the table but have now played a game more.

The result also keeps Al-Nassr’s faint championship hopes alive as they are now seven points behind the leaders with eight games of the season remaining.

It was a fierce battle, as is always expected in what is one of Asia’s biggest matches, but it was a deserved win for Al-Nassr.

While Ronaldo’s exploits will take the headlines, the opening goal, which came deep into added time at the end of the first half, was a thing of beauty. Marcelo Brozovic rolled a corner to the edge of the area where the home defense had switched off. There was still a lot of work to do for Ali Al-Hassan but he took one touch and then curled a perfect shot into the top corner to give the visitors the lead in spectacular fashion.

Two minutes after the restart, Ronaldo extended Al-Nassr’s lead with his 20th league goal of the season. Sadio Mane broke free down the left and pulled the ball back for the former Manchester United star inside the area who hooked his shot into the net.

The Al-Nassr fans, who had endured six winless league games in this fixture, went wild, but just after the hour Al-Hilal clawed themselves back into it. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic nodded a corner toward the back post and there was Ali Al-Bulaihi to head home from close range.

The Blues continued to push forward in search of an equalizer, but three minutes from the end Ronaldo secured the win for his side. A handball was given in the box and the 40-year-old scored from the spot, straight down the middle of the goal.

Attention now turns to the Jeddah derby on Saturday and all fans will be wondering whether Al-Ittihad can beat Al-Ahli to move seven points clear at the top.
