DUBAI: The European Union (EU) pledged on Friday financial aid of up to $96 million to Egypt, as the country reports growing cases of COVID-19.

A top EU commissioner said the bloc will “redirect up to €89 million of funds foreseen for Egypt to face emergencies due to pandemic and to support the immediate needs of the public health system,” as reported by local daily Egypt Today.

EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Oliver Varhelyi reiterated the need for countries to support each other amid the global crisis.

The move comes as Europe struggles with a rapidly growing number of coronavirus infections, which has already reached more than a million worldwide.
