ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday reported most coronavirus daily deaths in three months, as infection figures continue to surge amid the rapid spread of the omicron variant.
In the past 24 hours, the South Asian nation recorded 7,539 new COVID-19 cases and 25 related deaths — its highest daily death toll since October last year — according to data from the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), which oversees the country’s pandemic response.
The number of active cases crossed the 90,000 mark on Thursday, soaring to 91,854, with the virus positivity rate at 11.91 percent — above 10 percent for the eighth consecutive day — as the country is battling a fifth wave of infections fueled by the highly transmissible new variant.
Authorities have been urging people to get vaccinated and not to take the new variant lightly.
So far, the nation of 220 million has fully vaccinated 80.7 million of its residents.
