JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday he would leave Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in place given an escalating security crisis, reversing a decision to fire the minister that triggered protests and raised alarm abroad.
He said the two had resolved their disagreement over Gallant’s public call last month for a halt to the government’s bitterly divisive judicial overhaul plan, which Gallant said had become a threat to Israel’s security.
Last week Netanyahu announced he would delay the dismissal.
“I’ve decided to put our differences behind us,” Netanyahu said at a Monday press conference. He said the two had worked closely together throughout the last two weeks.
An Italian tourist was killed and five people were wounded in a car ramming in Tel Aviv on Friday hours after two Israeli sisters and their mother were killed in a shooting attack in the occupied West Bank.
The attacks, after a night of cross-border strikes in Gaza and Lebanon, added to heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions following Israeli police raids in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque this week.
The tensions threatened to widen when Israel responded to a barrage of rockets by hitting targets linked to Hamas in Gaza and southern Lebanon, but the fighting entered a lull on Friday.
A Sunday opinion poll, from Israel’s Channel 13 News, showed Netanyahu’s Likud party would lose more than a third of its seats if an election were held now, and Netanyahu would fail to gain a majority with his hard-right coalition partners.
“I’m not disturbed by the poll,” Netanyahu told reporters.
The prime minister said relations with the United States, which appeared strained over the government’s planned judicial overhaul, remained “tight” and the two countries enjoyed security and intelligence cooperation.
Netanyahu’s government paused legislation on the overhaul to allow for compromise discussions with opposition parties following weeks of nationwide protests.

Saudi influence expands as 8 new firms join MSCI’s Global and Small Cap Indexes
RIYADH: Eight new Saudi companies have joined MSCI’s global and small capital indexes, highlighting the Kingdom’s growing influence on the international investment landscape.
According to an official document, the financial solution provider has included SAL Saudi Logistics Services Co. in the MSCI Global Standard Index.
MSCI has also added seven stocks to the Small Cap Index, including Al-Babtain Power & Telecommunication, Etihad Atheeb Telecom, and the Mediterranean and Gulf Insurance and Reinsurance Group.
Additional inclusions comprised Middle Mast Pharmaceutical Industries Co., known as Avalon Pharma, Saudi Advanced Industries Co., Saudi Paper Manufacturing Co., and Walaa Cooperative Insurance Co.
Conversely, MSCI has removed six companies from the Small Cap Index: Amlak International for Real Estate Development & Finance Co., known as Amlak, Fawaz Abdulaziz Al Hokair & Co., known as Cenomi Retail, Methanol Chemicals Co., and Riyad REIT.
Additionally, Saudi Co. for Hardware and Saudi Arabian Refineries Co. have also been excluded.
As a result, the number of Saudi companies listed on the Small Cap Index now stands at 80, while the Global Standard Index includes 41 companies. MSCI stated that these changes will be implemented at market close on May 31.
The Saudi companies included in the MSCI Global Standard Index reflect the diverse and robust economic landscape of the Kingdom, with the oil giant Aramco leading the list.
The banking sector is represented by Al-Rajhi Bank, Riyad Bank, and Alinma Bank. It also includes Bank AlJazira, Bank AlBilad, and Saudi French Bank, as well as National Commercial Bank, SABB, and Saudi Investment Bank.
Industrial and petrochemical giants such as SABIC, Advanced Petrochemical, and Saudi Basic Industries Corp., as well as SABIC Agri-Nutrients, Kayan, Yansab, and Ma’aden, feature prominently in the global index, underscoring the Kingdom’s leadership in these fields. Telecommunications and technology are highlighted by stc and solutions by stc.
The healthcare sector includes Bupa Arabia for Cooperative Insurance Co., Dr Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Services Group Co., and Al-Mouwasat, as well as Dallah Healthcare, and Al-Nahdi Medical Co.
Retail and consumer goods are represented by Jarir Marketing Co., Almarai Co., and Savola Group, while the energy sector features Saudi Electricity Co., ACWA Power, and Power and Water Utility Co. for Jubail and Yanbu.
Additional key players include Saudi Research and Media Group, known as SRMG, Tadawul Group, and Luberef. The list also features the Co. for Cooperative Insurance, ADES Holding Co., and SAL Saudi Logistics Services Co., illustrating the wide-ranging and dynamic nature of Saudi Arabia’s corporate environment.
The Saudi companies in the MSCI Small Cap Index also represent diverse sectors, including Saudi Cement, Ataa Educational Co., Al-Rajhi Takaful, eXtra, and Arriyadh Development Co., known as Tameer.
MSCI stands as a premier provider of essential decision support tools and services for the worldwide investment community, according to its website.
Erdogan says Israel will ‘set sights’ on Turkiye if Hamas defeated

Erdogan, a vocal critic of Israel’s war in the Palestinian territory following Hamas’s attack on October 7, has often expressed support for the Palestinian group as defenders of their homeland.
Hamas is classed as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union, among others.
“Do not think that Israel will stop in Gaza,” Erdogan told his party lawmakers in the parliament in the capital Ankara.
“Unless it’s stopped... this rogue and terrorist state will set its sights on Anatolia sooner or later,” he said, referring to the large Turkish peninsula also called Asia Minor that comprises more than half of Turkiye’s territory.
“We will continue to stand by Hamas, which fights for the independence of its own land and which defends Anatolia,” added Erdogan.
The Turkish leader on Monday said more than 1,000 members of Hamas were being treated in Turkish hospitals amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
The October 7 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
Militants also seized some 250 hostages, 128 of whom Israel estimates remain in Gaza, including 36 the military says are dead.
Israel’s bombardment and offensive in Gaza have killed more than 35,000 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

BERLIN/JEDDAH: Saudia, the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, has flown the new Gen3 Formula E car to St. James’ Park in the UK to coincide with Newcastle United’s final home game of the season.
The carrier has a strategic partnership with the Premier League club and is also the official airline partner of the all-electric Formula E series.
The event coincided with the release of a short film bringing together the worlds of motorsport and football, with football fans being introduced to Formula E and the car.
“This event provides a fantastic platform for us to engage with our guests and the global audience, whether in person or through our innovative digital portals,” Khaled Tash, Saudia Group’s chief marketing officer, said in the statement.

German court convicts a Palestinian man of murder over a fatal stabbing on a train last year

BERLIN : A court in Germany convicted a man of murder and sentenced him to life in prison Wednesday for carrying out a fatal stabbing on a train last year.
The state court in Itzehoe convicted the 34-year-old Palestinian, who has been identified only as Ibrahim A. in line with German privacy rules, of murder and attempted murder, German news agency DPA reported.
It found that he fatally stabbed two teenagers and wounded another four passengers seriously in the Jan. 25, 2023 incident in the northern town of Brokstedt, before being overpowered by others on board the regional train traveling from Kiel to Hamburg.
The defendant grew up in the Gaza Strip and came to Germany in 2014.
A psychiatric expert testified during the trial that the defendant had psychotic symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder, but could be held criminally responsible for his actions. The defense lawyer had called for his client to be moved to a psychiatric institution.
Investigators have said the man had a previous criminal record and had been in pretrial custody in another case before being released days ahead of the attack. He had traveled to an appointment with immigration authorities in Kiel and prosecutors have said he appears to have acted out of frustration.
The severity of the case meant that he likely won’t be eligible for release after 15 years as is usually the case in Germany.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Tourism Authority on Tuesday announced the beginning of a popular cultural festival in Pakistan’s northwestern Chitral region, saying the event had attracted large numbers of foreign and local tourists like in the past.
The Chilm Josht festival is celebrated by the Kalash people, who are often described as pagan due to their religious beliefs and practices involving the worship of multiple gods and spirits, to mark the arrival of spring and celebrate the bounty of nature.
Known for music, dance, and colorful clothes, the festival is also associated with the preparation for new crops, symbolizing hope and prosperity for the community.
“The ancient Kalash festival ‘Chilm Josht’ has kicked off in full swing,” the KP tourism authority said in a statement. “Young women of Kalash danced to the beat of drums while wearing intricately embroidered garments, enhancing the colors of the festival.”
The statement added that district administration officials, members of the Kalash Development Authority and a large number of domestic and foreign tourists were also attending the festivity.
“The district administration has arranged foolproof security for the festival,” it added. “Tourism police are also providing services for the guidance of tourists.”
Chilm Josht is said to be the oldest festival of the Kalash tribe. It involves various rituals, the most well-known being the one where people dance with walnut branches in hand.
The festival will last for three days in the area known for its rugged terrain and scenic beauty. The annual event is considered integral to the identity of the indigenous Kalash community and the continuity of its ancient traditions.
