DUBAI: Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held a press briefing on Feb. 8 outlining the upcoming plans for the highly anticipated Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.

METI’s Director for International Exhibitions SUGANO Masafumi hosted the briefing giving an outline of what is to come for Japan’s Expo in three years. The theme is ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives.’

This theme calls on individuals to create a shared vision to create a sustainable future. It includes three subthemes: Saving lives; Empowering lives; and Connecting lives.

Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai aims to be a platform to help achieve the sustainable development goals set by the UN by 2030, according to the METI director.

Sugano said meetings were held with the Expo 2020 Dubai’s managerial director Reem Al-Hashimi to help perfect the upcoming one in Osaka.

The METI director told Arab News Japan that Al-Hashimi advised the Japan expo team with two messages. “The first message was the importance of building a legacy, making sure the Expo is not a singular event, but an event which will be remembered for generations,” Sugano said.

“We hope to leave a legacy through our various Expo activities in 2025, through businesses, governments and individuals,” he added.

The second message from Expo 2020 Dubai was diversity. “The Dubai team put together an organizational team consisting of 17 different nationalities, all from different private and public sectors,” he said.

“This being Japan and not Dubai, we probably will not be having that many nationalities in the association running the event,” Sugano explained. However, he said the team currently working on the 2025 event consists of various professions and backgrounds, ranging from the private sector, academia and local governments.

The UAE expo has three thematic pavilions, while Osaka’s will include eight different thematic pavilions. As of February, 78 countries and six international companies have confirmed their participation at the Osaka expo, Sugano told press.

Expo 2025 is scheduled to officially open on April 13 and will continue for six months until Oct. 13. The Japanese Association for the 2025 exposition is currently working closely with the Japanese government, especially in terms of implementing basic policies for the expo, Sugano said.

Deputy director of the International Exhibitions Promotion Office at METI Nanako Nakaoka participated during the press briefing. She explained that the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai mascots will soon be announced.

“Officially licensed merchandise has already been on sale since September 2021,” she said. “The material is made of sustainable material.”
