The Sony Xperia 1 now has an official U.S. release date.
Unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2019, the smartphone stands out from current brood with its super tall display. Now, those who have been enticed by it will have something to look forward to in the coming months.
Xperia 1 Availability
Sony announced the shipping date in a press release. According to the company, the Xperia 1 will be available on July 12 in the United States from retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo, Focus Camera, and more.
On the other side of the pond, Sony says that the smartphone is also already up for preorder from the Xperia online store, local retailers, and carriers, though there’s still no listing up at Amazon UK. Per The Verge, it’s expected to start shipping out the device on May 30 in the United Kingdom and retailers are pricing it at £899.
What To Expect From The Xperia 1
The Xperia 1 comes with the usual flagship internals: a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of native storage, and a decent 3,300 mAh battery. As mentioned earlier, it makes itself distinct with its tall 4K HDR OLED screen (3,840 x 1,644) that measures at 6.5 inches and boasts an aspect ratio of 21:9.
As expected from a high-end phone, it runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box and sports a triple-camera setup — wide, ultrawide, and telephoto lenses, all of which are rated at 12 megapixels — and a front-facing eight-megapixel snapper.
Xperia 2 Already?
While the Xperia 1 has yet to roll out, there are already leaks of its successor, presumably called Xperia 2.
As reported by XDA Developers, the next Xperia flagship will be an incremental upgrade at best. Design-wise, it’s going to be similar to the current Xperia phones and share the same 21:9 aspect ratio as the Xperia 1, but it’s said to have a smaller 6.1-inch screen.
If the report proves to be accurate, then it’s going to have the same Snapdragon 855, 6 GB of RAM, and a slightly smaller 3,000 mAh battery, which was likely reduced because of its more compact form factor. The triple-camera setup will also be placed on the side instead of in the center. As always, though, it’s best to take this kind of info with a grain of salt.
