ISLAMABAD: Ex-PM Imran Khan’s party announced on Saturday it will hold a power show in Islamabad next week, as it continues its anti-government campaign for early elections.
Since his ouster from power in a parliamentary vote of no-confidence in April, Khan has refused to recognize the new government of PM Shehbaz Sharif and has since held several mass demonstrations across the country, been rallying for new polls.
The ruling coalition has so far resisted his demand, insisting the government would complete its term by August next year.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf announced the mass demonstration is planned for Aug. 13, the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day.
Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, former information minister in Khan’s government party and a senior PTI leader, said Khan’s supporters will gather at the Parade Ground in the Pakistani capital to “hear the future strategy.”
“The imported government is running away from the elections, but the people will not let them run away,” he tweeted. “On August 13th, all of Pakistan will gather at the Parade Ground in support of Imran Khan.”
Khan was removed from office after he lost majority in parliament.
He has since held several anti-government demonstrations across the country, saying his ouster was part of a Washington-backed “foreign conspiracy.” The US has repeatedly denied the allegations.
